WEBINAR - Translating Alzheimer’s Disease Research from Mice to Humans in Rural Montana

TOPIC: Translating Alzheimer’s Disease Research from Mice to Humans in Rural Montana: Challenges and Solutions to Clinical Research in a Rural Setting

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: Dr. Hensley-McBain will talk about her work investigating inflammatory mechanism in Alzheimer’s disease in mice and the work she is launching to investigate these mechanisms in persons with Alzheimer’s disease. Rebecca Brown will discuss the underrepresentation of Montana in clinical trials, the challenges the team has faced in implementing clinical research in a rural setting, and some of the solutions they have implemented to bring clinical research to their area.

SPEAKERS: Rebecca Brown, BSN, RN and Tiffany Hensley-McBain, PhD, Assistant Professor

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES:

Rebecca Brown, BSN, RN -
Born and raised in Montana, Rebecca is a registered nurse with extensive experience in critical care, public health, and care coordination. She also has experience as a biomedical research assistant where she implemented experiments focused on the genetic susceptibility of prion disorders. Currently, Rebecca is the Clinical Research Coordinator at McLaughlin Research Institute for Biomedical Sciences where she and her colleagues are building a human subjects research department with the goal of advancing interventional research toward clinical application in Montana. Rebecca is passionate about ensuring appropriate inclusion and representation of Montana residents in clinical research. She utilizes her unique combination of experience to propel education and discussion about overcoming the barriers rural states face with clinical research execution.

Tiffany Hensley-McBain, PhD, Assistant Professor
- Dr. Hensley-McBain is a faculty member at the McLaughlin Research Institute in Great Falls, Montana. During her graduate and postdoctoral work at the University of Washington, she studied chronic inflammation in infectious disease. Her work at the McLaughlin is focused on chronic inflammation in Alzheimer’s disease as a potential therapeutic target. Her lab uses transgenic mouse models to investigate the immune system and microbial dysbiosis in the context of genetic risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease with the goal of determining new targets for therapies. Her goal is to translate findings from mice to people by expanding clinical research infrastructure and opportunities in Central Montana. She is the principal investigator of a study in collaboration with a local clinic that investigates immunological mechanisms in persons with Alzheimer’s disease and a patient registry aimed at expanding clinical trial opportunities for Montanans with neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Hensley-McBain is also faculty at Touro College of Medicine Montana, for which she runs the Medical Scientist training program, with an inaugural class starting in the fall of 2023.
